Ready for a world of reading

Challenge purpose

The purpose of the L.A. Unified Reading Challenge is to recognize and encourage students to discover and/or reinforce the power and joy of reading. This year the Reading Challenge will be utilizing the Renaissance myON digital platform, which has over 6500 titles–fiction, nonfiction–in English and Spanish. Many of the books have an audio component (actors reading the text).   The hope is that students will explore these book resources and find multiple books that ignite their imaginations and open doors to new worlds, cultures, ideas, people, and dreams.

Challenge participation

All L.A. Unified students, grades TK - 12, are encouraged to participate. The challenge is divided into the following grade bands:

  • TK - 2: number of books read
  • 3 - 6: number of pages read
  • 6 - 8: number of pages read
  • 9 - 12: number of pages read

Students, classes (core English Language Arts class in grades 6 -12), and schools in each grade level band will be recognized for their participation and reading achievement during the challenge.

Renaissance myON:

myON captures student reading data (book titles, number of books and pages) automatically. The app can only be accessed through Schoology and/or Clever:
